Abstract
This study aims to draw a comprehensive conclusion of domestic studies on elderly loss and depression, and to analyze results that have been made previously. The association between loss and depression in the elderly was examined using a meta-analysis across 54 studies published from 2000 to 2021 in Korea. Analyzing the effect size, the results were as follows: (a) overall loss and depression (Fisher¡¯s : 0.365, <.001) showed a medium effect size. As a result of examining the effect size, subjective health loss and depression in 27 papers (Fisher¡¯s : 0.408, <.001) showed a relatively high effect size. Furthermore, (b) economic loss and depression in 10 papers (Fisher¡¯s : 0.388, <.001) showed a medium effect size, also loss of meaningful relationship with others and depression (Fisher¡¯s : 0.378, <.001), physical health loss and depression (Fisher¡¯s : 0.35, <.001) showed a medium effect size. Lastly, (c) bereavement and depression in 6 papers (Fisher¡¯s : 0.271, <.001) and loss of roles in the family and depression (Fisher¡¯s : 0.23, <.001) showed a relatively low effect size. This study is significant as systematically verifies the relationship between loss experiences on depression in the elderly by verifying and integrating the relationship between independent loss variables and depression from existing studies.
